Applications are now available for the Port of Long Beach’s Summer High School Internship Program and Scholarship Program for Long Beach-area high school students. Applications, eligibility information and detailed instructions for both programs are available on the Port's education portal website, academy.polb.com.
The summer internships, a partnership between the Port and Pacific Gateway, are a paid opportunity for Long Beach-area high school students to explore careers in the goods movement industry. The program runs from June 24 through Aug. 1 and is open to high school juniors and seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District service area.
"The Board of Harbor Commissioners is committed to developing the leaders of tomorrow for the maritime industry, and our internship and scholarship programs are a great way to do that,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Tracy Egoscue. "The Port’s summer interns are local students who gain hands-on experience in the professional working world, and our scholarships support area students who are pursuing college degrees in international trade-related fields.”
The scholarships are open to LBUSD-area high school seniors pursuing careers in international trade, logistics and other port-related industries. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000, which will be disbursed over four years. Students at California State University, Long Beach, and Long Beach City College should inquire with their schools regarding additional Port scholarships. Since 1993, the Port has awarded more than $775,000 in scholarships to local students.
Applications for both programs are due March 1; no late applications will be accepted. Applicants are advised to read the instructions carefully.
The Port will host two information sessions for students and parents to learn more about the internship and scholarship program. The first session will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 9 a.m. and the second session on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. Both sessions will be held at the Port of Long Beach offices, 4801 Airport Plaza Drive, Long Beach 90815. To attend, please RSVP to Alejandra Güitrón at: email@example.com or (562) 283-7719.
